I have always been overweight. I hit 100 pounds in 3rd grade .... a traumatic day for me as the teachers weighed us in front of the whole class using one of those scales where you move the 50 lb weight and then shift the one pound weight to the right until it balances. I was the only one in the class where the 50 lb weight had to be moved twice ... Ka-Thunk .... Ka-Thunk .... Everyone knew what that meant. I was bullied and teased for the rest of my elementary school life ... all the way to 8th grade.
I grew up on a farm with 3 younger siblings. We all ate healthy ... no fast food ... the best meats and vegetables from our farm and gardens and local gardens .... my sister and brothers were not overweight .... but I was.
Name a diet, I have tried it. And I would lose weight and then gain it back ... the typical yo-yo dieter. The one thing which really worked for me was PhenFen!! I loved that stuff! But it got removed from the market in 1997 because people were dying!! Heart damage, lung issues .... sigh. I had lost 80 lbs on it ... within a month of stopping it, I gained 40 back. YIKES!! I could always lose weight, just could never keep it off!
Fast forward to 2005 ... age 45 ... I had to have a full hysterectomy and due to my family medical history could not take the HRT recommended after such a procedure. I had always had a very full hourglass type figure ... I had a waist .... but after the hysterectomy I started gaining weight in places I wasn't used to .... especially my waist! Suddenly the old dependable diets weren't working for me, things that had always worked before. So in 2007 I took drastic steps and joined a local GYM!! And I got a trainer at the gym. I swam, I ellipticalled, I lifted weights, I yogaed, I pilated, I walked .... AND I dieted. I counted calories taken in and calories burned. I kept track on SparkPeople.com and when I didn't lose any weight I printed out reports and took them to my DR. to ask WHY?? He had no idea.
I even tried MediFast for 6+ weeks .... packaged foods ... controlled calorie intake of less than 1000 calories a day. Tom lost weight .... I didn't lose a single pound. And the artificial sweeteners in their shakes and bars had negative effects on me. I don't handle Aspertame or Splenda well at all. Everyone loses weight on MediFast .... Not Me!! Besides .... that is an expensive diet and it is very difficult to maintain the weightloss after stopping MediFast.
So .... my failure with MediFast was in 2009 and after that I just decided to live and let live. I have been overweight my whole life .... Maybe God wants me that way! I starve on diets and nothing changes. I workout and don't lose weight. So I gave up on dieting and decided to eat and drink what I want to when I want to!! And guess what! I didn't GAIN weight, either. But I am about 120 lbs overweight so it's nice that I didn't gain ... but I was still FAT! I stopped the training and stopped going to the gym and still didn't GAIN weight. Curious.
But in 2012 my legs started hurting and I realized that if I was going to carry this body around, I at least needed to stay in some sort of physical shape .... so I returned to the gym and hired a trainer with the sole purpose of staying physically strong and cardiovascularly healthy even if I couldn't lose weight. My trainer has turned out to be the best trainer I have ever had .... I've only had 5, but Liz Nath is by far the BEST. She really really cares and she really really pushes me. I whine and complain the whole time and she still pushes me. I call her "mean" and "evil" on Facebook and she still pushes me. She doesn't just "mail it in" like so many of the other trainers did. Under her tutelage I gained strength and muscle and some toning .... but I didn't lose a single pound. My inches didn't change. I felt a lot better (when I wasn't aching from the new muscles she managed to hurt each session)! We weighed and tape measured on a regular basis .... no change. I had warned her when we started that I wouldn't lose weight! I don't think she believed me. I was fine with the new muscle and fitness ... she was frustrated I didn't lose weight!
